Sad News - Past President Randy Smith Passes

Postby Jim Sheppard » Tue Aug 22, 2017 3:00 pm

It is with a heavy heart I must inform all that Randy Smith has gone to be with his beloved wife Mary and father Randolph Sr. He was found Monday, August 21st, 2017, and had apparently died of heart failure that was almost instantaneous.

Services will be Friday evening, August 25, from 4 to 8 PM and Saturday the 26th morning at 11 AM at Voss Funeral Services, Chestnut St, Seymour, IN.

I will be at both services and am staying at the Hampton Inn from Thursday (late) until Sunday.

I have posted an obituary for Randy on the "Taps" page: http://www.ichiban1.org/pdf/Obituary/SmithRObit.pdf

Thank you so much, Jim. Dad was never happier than when spending time with his brothers in the 1/50th. We miss him so very much but have the support of good friends and family.

We have details here on the service:

Randy: was a man of many hats. He was a pleasure to hang with at reunions, he had brought alot of us together to enjoy the good things of life. At the last reunion being one to sit at the table with him and seeing his reaction to being announced as one of five to receive the Order of St. Maurice Award was a special moment you knew he honored. We all loved Randy with his ability to bring us all together with words and outgoing friendship. Prayers go out to his family and friends, He has FALLEN BUT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

We had 12 people attend Randy's services on Friday and Saturday of last week...10 Members and 2 wives. Pictured below at the service before the funeral are:
Left to right - Jimmy Segars, Jim Sheppard, John Topper, Robert Melendez, Larry Curtis, Mick Hawkins, Toby Jordan, Dennis Apana, Toby Milroy and Gary Quint.
Not pictured but in attendance were Loretta Segars and Kay Quint.

We were treated like royalty everywhere we went in Seymour, Indiana...Randy's home town. The occasion, although quite solemn and difficult was "lightened" by fond memories of our departed brother.

Note received from the Smith Family.

To: The 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry Association

Thank you for sending the lovely flowers in memory of Randy. It was beautiful and thoughtful. The friendship of his veteran brothers meant the world to Randy. The flowers were a reminder of that, and gave us great comfort.

Signed: RJ, Adam, Kelly and Trish (Smith)
