I am closing out another year at the helm of this website. This marks the completion of my 8th year. My true love...being your historian...has suffered
from the time lost meticulously keeping up this website. I have managed to update the "look" of many pages...but my best contribution has been the addition of our Memorial Pages for
each 50th Infantry man killed in action. That work is near completion. Time spent posting up photo albums, etc...had to be put on hold...and I have also had to push back new National
Archive Research trips. I still plan on a trip or two to the National Archives Personnel Records Center in Saint Louis, but that will likely not come until sometime late in 2015 or 2016....Lord Willing! I have also contacted the Texas Tech Vietnam Archives representatives and discussed beginning to supply copies of our Document Archives to their fantastic efforts at chronicling our war. Preliminary plans call for the "Jim Sheppard Collection" to be submitted in Electronic format sometime early in 2014. Eventually, they will be the recipient of the hard copy files we now display at reunions. I am doing this since our vast collection of documentation will be guaranteed an everlasting legacy and, once they have our Hard Copy files, they will be able to make all our files available to researchers from their website. In the interim before Hard Copies are provided, Researchers will be advised of what documentation exists in the collection, but the files will only be downloadable by an "on-site" visit to Texas Tech. This is done for various legal reasons. If the University has a hard copy that is properly marked as "declassified", they can allow copy to be downloaded from the internet...but until this hard copy submission is made to them...they can only allow researchers who visit the Texas Tech Vietnam Archives "on campus" to have access to our files via computer. I want to wish everyone, both Association Members as well as any who belonged to all 50th Infantry designations as well as supporting units in Vietnam... their families and all our new friends from the modern 50th Infantry at Fort Benning, the very best wishes for a healthy and happy new year! |

Added book reviews for 11 books on Vietnam that I read between February and December of 2013 on the Vietnam Books Review page. Added were: Phantom Warriors and Phantom Warriors Book II by Gary Linderer, One More Sunrise by Curtis Gay, Rites of Passage by Robert Peterson, Outside the wire by Jim Ross, DaNang Diary by Colonel Tom Yarborough, The Lucky Few by Jan Herman, Accross the Fence and On The Ground by John Stryker Meyer and Empty Tubes & Backseat Memories by Russ Warriner. I Also added comment to Ken Riley's review of "100 miles of bad road"...which I also read. |

As you can tell by reading these updates, I have been adding Awards, etc, to our Memorial Pages for the past 3 years since acquiring hundreds of General Orders from the National Archives in 2009. To speed up this process, I have stopped adding every name as these updates are added individually. Proceeding alphabetically, I am finally on the final dozen or so...up to "W". I did want to mention, in particular, that I have acquired photos for Richard Belinge and Michael Walker and they have been added to their In Memoriam pages. |

Sometimes the coincidences that occur as I continue to fine tune our Memorial Pages are stunning. Last month, while hoping to acquire a photo of Robert Leska, I was put in touch with his family and informed that in one week they would all be gathering in Connecticut for a special Veterans Memorial! I was able to attend and obtain a photo of our man. Tonight, as I continue through our Memorial Pages in alphabetical order....still adding information obtained over 3 years ago (I should finally be finished by early next year!) I noticed that I completed updating Tom Pipkin's page at the exact hour and date that he was killed in action in 1967...our first casualty! |

Happy New Year to all! I have loaded this new "site updates" page for 2013 and archived the 2012 updates to the "Site Map" page. Today marks the beginning of my 7th year maintaining our website... and I am into my 14th year as Historian. I don't know how useful this "site update" page is to the membership, but I like to think it would be a "first stop" when folks check the website every so often. I have a short stack of things I need to add to the site in the coming days...but my "workhorse" desktop computer is in the shop getting some faulty USB ports diagnosed...so they will have to wait..as my backup laptop does not have all our files...and, although I could still manage some of the work, it would be problematic transferring all the changed items back to the Desktop. Of course, this is a Reunion year...and I will be diving right into preparation for same. The first order of business for me will be to do a mailing to our KIA Family and Friends contact list. Most of these are sent via email, but there are still quite a few addresses I need to send "snail mail" as I do not have email addresses for everyone & some just don't have computers. |
